Retractable Neo-Realism

ARTFULROG3R is the digital-art identity of Scottish artist R.P. Gribben, based in East London, creating psychologically charged portraits and figures that sit between recognisable reality and emotional reconstruction.

Gribben photographs, layers, redraws and manually manipulates his own original imagery, allowing raw marks and digital intervention to collide. Faces split into competing expressions; bodies become frameworks carrying memory, pressure and vulnerability; colour behaves less like decoration and more like an emotional force.

Gribben calls this evolving visual language Retractable Neo-Realism. “Retractable” describes the way a familiar subject can withdraw, fracture and return in altered form. “Neo-Realism” is not a claim to photographic accuracy, but to a deeper kind of recognition: the reality of a thought, a damaged memory, a guarded identity or a feeling that cannot be shown by conventional portraiture.

His related idea of Pigmentation Manipulation describes how colour is pushed, displaced and re-layered until it changes the psychological reading of the original image. Electric reds, toxic greens, deep blues and exposed black line become structural elements. They hide, reveal and rebuild the subject, sometimes allowing a second face or alternate figure to emerge depending on how the work is viewed.

The result is deliberately unstable: part portrait, part self-examination and part visual interruption. Rather than presenting a single fixed meaning, each work asks the viewer to find the point where the figure stops being an image and begins to feel like a state of mind.

Recognition

A face, figure or gesture remains visible enough to anchor the viewer in lived experience.

Retraction

Forms withdraw, fracture and overlap, making room for hidden expressions and alternate identities.

Reconstruction

Line, colour and manual digital intervention rebuild reality as something more psychologically exact.
